Planes, Trains & Automobiles: Europe Edition!

Bonjour, top 'o the mornin', ello, & how do you do!

Over 26 days I had the pleasure of touring through France, Ireland, Scotland, and England!  I have never been on so many types of transportation, including many busses!  I'm going to attempt to count them all at the end, for now here are some pictures of all of the different ways I traveled to and from each lovely city and country.  I'd have to say overall, trains were my favorite.  With the Eurail pass it was simple; being able to board whichever train you like without a reservation makes for simple traveling!  2nd favorite would have to be riding in taxis in Ireland, Scotland, and England on the opposite side of the road with the driver on the right!  3rd favorite would be going upstairs on most of the public busses! Okay, onto a mini photo journal of my adventures.

First stop: Paris, France

Paris is a huge, bustling place and was just overwhelming and wonderful all at the same time!  My friends and I decided the underground Metro was the easiest way to get around.  There are stations all over the city and each one way ticket was around $2.  We bought packs of 10 and it was quick and easy to go in and out of the stations.  For the most part, the trains were on time and would come about every 7 minutes.  During the weekdays, it was mostly business people heading to work, and the weekends it would be full of families, couples, teenagers, etc.

Here's what a Metro ticket looks like:

Metro maps were posted all over the place which was so helpful! Our apartment was closest to the Arts Et Metier station in the lower right corner:

Busy station:

On the Metro! And enjoy a lovely surprise below...

One day it was a bit rainy so we decided to hop on a water taxi that takes you all around the city to the famous sites along the Seine! Then of course it got sunny after we boarded :) :

We ventured by Metro on a day trip to the Palace of Versailles.  The gardens were unbelievable and huge, so we rented bikes!
On Bastille Day, which is France's independence day, the Metro was SO crowded!  Some stations were even closed because of safety hazards with too many people underground.  We took the Metro as far as we could go and hopped off to go see the firework show at the Eiffel Tower!

From Paris we flew up to Dublin (after almost missing our flight...)!  From the airport we took a very convenient bus to the City Centre and were able to find our hostel pretty easily!  For the most part we walked around Dublin since it was so pedestrian friendly and not too big.  We took a train down to Cork to go see the Blarney Castle!  Here is a picture of our lovely bus!

Next stop: Ireland

And what better way to wait for the bus...mmm

From Cork, we took yet another train up to Galway on the west coast of Ireland.  While there we took a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher also by bus!  The windy roads to the cliffs were miniature, yet somehow this huge bus maneuvered around every single one...:/

Next stop: Scotland

A few trains and busses later, I headed over to Scotland by ferry!  Walking on I was expecting a little tiny boat that I would FREEZE on as we got tossed around the Irish Sea.  Little did I know the ferry was actually 10 stories and basically a cruise ship!

After arriving and taking a quick bus ride, I was in Glasgow, Scotland!  I spent the day there and then took a bus to the.....you guessed it....bus station! Bus is the word of the day :)
Here's my bus fare, a mere 1 pound 85 pence!

From there, I payed 6 pounds to go over to Edinburgh which was about an hour ride.  After walking my poor feet off there I decided to take my first double decker, open air bus tour!  Which really is a fun way to see the city from above!
Right above my head, on the hill, you can see the Edinburgh Castle in the distance!

Next stop: England

After my day in Edinburgh I took 2 trains down to England and made my first stop in Liverpool!  From Liverpool I took a taxi to the train station.
I felt like royalty sitting in the backseat of this precious little taxi!

After a few days outside of London, it was time for me to hit the Olympic city!!  I was really excited for this last week of my trip in such a happening place!  I was a little bit nervous to tackle the "tube" which is London's metro system that goes all over the city.  I got a little map and loaded up my "Oyster card" rather than buying the individual tickets like in Paris.
Special "Olympic Lanes" only.  Big fines if you drive here if you're not part of the games!

A double decker bus with the lovely St. Paul's Cathedral in the background

Here's my Oyster card that I payed for a week of use on, so handy!  You just scan it each time you go downstairs to whichever line you're using.
There were musicians all over the stations.  Sometimes there would be artwork in the tube stations!
I found the tube so incredibly simple to figure out and I used it several times everyday I was there!

There was one day that the tube was really crowded and delayed because of the Olympics, so I hopped off and found a bus to take me where I wanted to go!  This was my first experience on a two story indoor bus! This view is looking over Oxford Street in London, which is a major shopping area of town! (And no, I did NOT eat at KFC while I was there :) )

After a week of wandering around London and getting to know the tube, it was time for me to go home :(  Yet again, there was a simple bus route that took me right to Heathrow Airport from where I was staying!
Here's my lovely luggage all set to go!

Time to do some calculations!
50+ Metro/tube rides, 17 bus rides, 11 train adventures, 6 trips by car, 5 plane flights, 5 taxi rides, 2 boat floats, 1 fun bike ride, and infinite miles of walking...

=a fantastic European holiday!!!!!

I miss it already!

The Bus Bachelorette!

Just over a month ago I had my last bus ride home from school as an undergraduate!  I like to call myself now the "Bachelorette" since achieving my Bachelors :) It was the perfect ride home; I really couldn't have asked for more.  That last week on the bus, I saw the guy who gave me a flower on Valentine's Day, I saw Eddy my singer man, and I saw a friend again who is deaf and I was able to sign with her and get to know her a little better!

I'm excited to say that for Graduate school I will still be riding public transportation, but my new adventures will be on the light rail!  I've heard some interesting stories of friends who ride the light rail and it definitely sounds like it too will be just as entertaining.  I will definitely miss YoloBus and the downtown Sac bus.

A few bus stories from this summer!

For Father's Day we went to a car museum in Sacramento and saw lots of neat cars from long ago and some from current times.  My favorite was the vintage bus built in 1955!  I was even allowed to step on and check it out.  I felt very special, being a professional bus-blogger and all ;)

It was a neat museum and is changing all the time, check it out!

On a quick flight down to LA, I was going to be car-less and after seeing how expensive rental cars would be, it finally dawned on me to check out the bus situation!  I don't know why I didn't think of it sooner, but as soon as I started looking into the routes and costs I was blown away at the simplicity of it.  And not to mention the tickets were only $1.50!

After flying into Burbank Airport I had a short walk to nearest major street and hopped on the Burbank Transit!

The bus was clean and comfortable and the driver was very nice.  It took me about 20 minutes and then I was in a lovely area in Burbank to spend the afternoon!

It's amazing how hopping on the bus instantly makes you feel more like a resident than a tourist :)  I was definitely a proud bus rider there.  Oh and these busses have tvs in them, impressive!

The next day I was staying in West Hollywood and needed to get to Burbank for my morning flight.  Using my handy phone, I was able to see there was a pickup on the route that would take me back to the airport, only .5 miles from where I was staying!!  I took a lovely stroll over to Hollywood Blvd and checked out the stars on the way to my stop.

I hopped on and along the way I saw some fun sights!

Grauman's Chinese Theater was across the street from my stop.

Passed right by Warner Bros studio!

After a quick, relaxing bus ride I was back at the Burbank Airport and hopped right on my flight.  It was such nice way to travel and really the cheapest!  A rental car would have been around $50 (since I'm under 25...dumb) and a taxi all around those two days would have been at least that much!

Public transportation saves the day, once again!!

Happy summer,

"I Can't Help Falling In Love With You"...Eddy!

On my rainy ride home this afternoon, I hopped off the 30 (which takes me from CSUS to downtown Sac) and as soon as I stepped outside I heard someone singing. My usual instinct to someone being loud is to keep a bit of distance...but then as I actually listened I realized the singing was quite good!! So, I walked closer and sat on the bench just down from a little old man with headphones on. He was singing beautifully along with his TAPE player...cute! I was so impressed and couldn't believe it, so I mustered up the courage to go ask him if I could record him! I wanted to be able to share it on here so much, so I walked over and asked him. I told him that I wrote a little blog and he was just too sweet!

He said, "of course!" He had to rewind his tape to get ready for the video, prepare to be wooed like I was...

Everyone, meet Eddy!

The lady sitting next to him was moved to tears and said that her mother used to play that record when she was little and his beautiful voice reminded her of her mom. Aw!

He then went on to sing: "Love Me Tender", "Teddy Bear", "Heartbreak Hotel" (he got a little fiesty on that one!!), and some other oldies. He told me he sings in the mall sometimes, but never wants money. I told him he should put out a hat or something, he could rake in the dough! His favorite music is rock and roll, and I asked him about some of his other favorite artists. Elvis is his top choice, but he also said he likes Jerry Lee Lewis and Engelbert Humperdinck. Singing is his favorite hobby :)

I hope this brightened your rainy day! I just can't help but keep watching it!

From lovely Seattle in January to Valentine's Day on the bus...

Enjoying Sea-Tac's unique style :)

Happy almost spring!

This post is going to be a kind of random love child between Seattle public transportation and my first lovely Valentine's bus experience...relish in the diversity! haha

In January I flew up to see my friend Lauren in Seattle and when booking my flight I had the option of getting in at 3 pm or 8 pm...I chose 3 and decided somehow I'd figure my way to downtown until she got off work! A couple days before my trip I started digging around online to try and find the best option. I kept seeing "Soundtransit" and thought that looked good! I looked at the route from the airports and the stops were kind of familiar...so I thought I'd just take a risk and see where I ended up!

As soon as I got off my flight and got my bag, I immediately saw signs for the Transit and headed towards it! Kudos to you, Sea-Tac, good signage! Then I made it to the litte kiosk where you buy your ticket.

Once I bought my ticket from the airport to downtown, for only $2.75!!!, I continued to follow the signs and boarded my train. I think they were leaving just about every 15 minutes, so it was very convenient. The train was very clean and felt safe. It was nice to hop on and then just wait til I heard my stop!

View from the train, there's Seattle!!

After about a half an hour ride I arrived and walked outside. I will admit that I had to use my phone to help me find out exactly where I was...and to my joy I was only a block away from Pike Place Market! I meandered around the market, went in an antique store, ate the most amazing pear of my whole life (Taylor Gold, incase you were wondering), saw a gorgeous sunset, and then ate a macaroon for the first time! Yum....macaroon.....mmmmmmmm

I thought this sign was cute...outside the antique store

Isn't this incredible?! What a brilliant artist God is.

I had a great trip, and I definitely recommend the Soundtransit light raail if you're heading up to Seattle anytime soon! Here's a link if you want to check it out:

Onto more lovey dovey things :)

Here's a little video I recorded after my exciting Feb 14th...

I hope you had a great Valentine's day or if not, atleast got a little laugh out of mine!!
